On the Ground Floor

Feast Hall

Access: Public
Audible in Bar: If window/door open, or shouting.
An enormous room, lit with gas chandeliers, huge tables with accompanying benches span the width of it, in six columns of four tables. A bar extends along the back wall, with doors leading out into the identical bar outside the building, and along the right wall, a door leads to the kitchen. Along the front wall, an exit leads to the front hall. The front wall bears two fireplaces, and there is sufficient space in the centre of the room for dancing.

Courtesans' Parlours

Access: Opens with key.
Audible in Bar: If window/door open, or shouting.
These are suites, divided into a living area, a sleeping area, and a washroom. Furniture, by default, includes a toilet, washbasin, and bath, in the washroom; a large bed, two nightstands, a wardrobe, and a commode, in the sleeping area; and a couch, armchairs, coffee table, sideboard, and writing-table, in the living area. All courtesans' parlours have windows on one wall, facing either the front or rear of the building. If the windows are open, loud conversation may pass between the back parlours and the bar.

Front Desk & Cloakroom

Access: Opens with key.
Audible in Bar: No, or only extraordinarily loud sounds.
The front desk is no longer in use, since most patrons now arrive via the gate in the bar, instead of the front doors.

Music Room

Access: Public
Audible in Bar: No, or only extraordinarily loud sounds.
The music room contains an upright piano and a harp, as well as music stands and comfortable seating. One wall is lined with shelves, containing sheet music, tuning forks, and strings and reeds for a variety of instruments.

Game Room

Access: Public
Audible in Bar: No, or only extraordinarily loud sounds.
The game room contains wooden tables with comfortable chairs and a wall of shelves containing a variety of board, card, and dice games, including books with instructions.

Lounge

Access: Public
Audible in Bar: No, or only extraordinarily loud sounds.
This room, just off the main foyer, contains a variety of couches, armchairs, and lounges around low tables. One wall is occupied with books from the ceiling to about hip-height, and the cabinets below are locked. A cart sits under the window, with decanters of cheap brandy and whiskey, a pitcher of water, and glasses.

Toilets

Access: Public
Audible in Bar: No, or only extraordinarily loud sounds.
Toilets can be found to either side of the entry hall. They contain stalls with pull-chain toilets and a row of washbasins with pumps on the opposite wall. Each room, at the far end, contains a smoking bench, small table with an ashtray, and a basket of single-use accoutrements for freshening up.

Kitchen

Access: Staff only. Protected by fatal wards.
Audible in Bar: If window/door open, or shouting.
The kitchen is fairly large, containing at one end a door to behind the outdoor bar. Another door leads into the feast hall. At the other end from the bar door is a fireplace, with a spit and a cauldron hook. Above it, on the same chimney is a masonry oven. In the corner to the left are the warm racks which keep the food at a decent temperature until it is served. Farther up the wall can be found a Castrol-style peat stove, with three chambers and six shieldable fireholes. Open fireholes provide more direct heat than closed ones, although in either state, there is support to rest a pan over them. Farther along that wall are the dish and pan cabinets. In the centre of the room are three wood-topped islands used for preparation and serving. Above these are hanging baskets of fresh fruit and vegetables. On the opposite wall, two washbasins with drying racks can be found, along with pantry cabinets and two ice boxes, for cold goods. Beneath the counter between the washbasins, separate bins are kept for compost and non-compost rubbish. To get a feel for the kitchen, check out the images, below, from another period building, Uppark House.

Laundry

Access: Staff only. Protected by fatal wards.
Audible in Bar: No, or only extraordinarily loud sounds.
The laundry contains a pair of hand-crank rotating drum washers along with another steam-powered model, that is a bit particular about when it feels like working. The washers have wringers attached, and the room also features a pair of coal-fired drum dryers, and many feet of line crossing one end of the room, for hanging delicates.
